Welcome to ARQUIPÉLAGO PRESS
Arquipélago Press is an independent literary press based in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. We publish emerging and established writers from the Portuguese North American diaspora, as well as Portuguese literature in translation.
Founder and publisher Fernanda Viveiros launched the press in May 2021 by reissuing Memória: An Anthology of Portuguese Canadian Writers. Originally published in 2013 and long out of print, the second edition has reached readers across Canada and the United States, with copies also making their way to Porto—and to the iconic Shakespeare and Company in Paris.
In the fall of 2022, we published our second title, Mary John, a luminous coming-of-age illustrated novel by Ana Pessoa. Our catalogue has since grown to include The Hyphen and Other Thoughts from the In-Between by MJ Maciel Jorge; Homecoming by acclaimed Portuguese author José Luís Peixoto; Here & Elsewhere: An Anthology of Portuguese Canadian Writers; and Olinda Beja’s The Shepherd’s House, a collection of short stories edited by renowned translator Margaret Jull Costa. Alice in Thunderland & Other Stories by Teolinda Gersão will be released in November 2026.
Arquipélago Press is interested in the connections between Portuguese literature and the Lusophone communities that have taken root worldwide. We seek to publish writers from different backgrounds and generations, as well as Portuguese-language authors whose work deserves a wider English-language readership. Our books range from immigrant memoir and contemporary fiction to short stories, illustrated literature, and works in translation.
As a small independent press, we have the freedom to follow our interests and build a catalogue gradually, with an emphasis on distinctive voices and literature that might otherwise be overlooked. We hope to create a space where Portuguese North American writing and Portuguese literature in translation can reach new readers and enter into conversation with the wider literary world.
